Postpartum Lymphatic Massage in Santa Barbara
Swollen ankles, puffy hands, a midsection that still feels full of water weeks after birth — postpartum fluid retention is common, and it can be frustrating when you're already running on no sleep. Postpartum lymphatic massage is one of the gentlest ways to help your body clear it.
Why swelling hangs around after birth
Your body carries significantly more fluid during pregnancy, and after birth it has to clear it. Hormones, IV fluids during delivery, and a C-section can all add to the swelling. Most of it resolves on its own, but it can take weeks.
What postpartum lymphatic drainage does
It's a light, rhythmic massage that moves fluid toward the lymph nodes so your body can clear it faster. The pressure stays just under the skin. There's nothing to brace against. Most new moms say it's the most relaxing hour they've had since the baby arrived, and you will need the bathroom more than usual afterward — that's the work doing its job.
When you can start
With your OB's or midwife's go-ahead. After a vaginal birth that's often within the first few weeks. After a C-section, we wait for your provider's clearance and work around the incision until it's fully healed. I'll ask for that clearance at intake.
When to call your provider instead
Swelling in one leg only, calf pain or warmth, shortness of breath, or swelling with headaches or vision changes. Those need to be checked right away and are not a reason to book a massage.
What to book
Most postpartum clients book the Lymphatic Sculpt – Body (60 min). If facial puffiness is bothering you too, the Face & Body (90 min) covers both, with LED light therapy included on the face.
Sessions are with Amanda Schwartz, CAMTC license 93362, at 4213 State Street, Suite 206, Santa Barbara. See sessions and prices on the lymphatic massage Santa Barbara page, or text 805-881-3390.
