Medical Massage in Santa Barbara
Focused, hands-on treatment for injury recovery, chronic pain and restricted movement. Licensed therapist on State St. Book online or text today.
Medical massage is focused, outcome-based bodywork aimed at a specific problem, such as an injury, chronic pain or restricted movement, rather than general relaxation. At Schwartz Sports Massage on upper State Street, Amanda Schwartz, CMT, starts each session with a conversation about your history, what aggravates your symptoms and what your doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor has told you. From there we choose techniques that fit your goals and track your progress from visit to visit.

What Is Medical Massage?
A regular massage is usually aimed at overall relaxation. Medical massage targets a specific condition, with a treatment plan and goals you can measure, like turning your head without pain, sleeping through the night or getting back to running. Many clients come to us on the recommendation of a doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor, and we're happy to work alongside your care team.
Techniques we use
We combine orthopedic and sports massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, strain-counterstrain, cupping and manual lymphatic drainage, choosing what fits your condition and how your body responds. Treatment is built around how your whole body works together, not just the spot that hurts.
Who can benefit
Medical massage may help if you're dealing with:
-
Neck, shoulder and low back pain
-
Sciatica and hip pain
-
Sports injuries and overuse strains
-
TMJ and jaw tension
-
Post-surgical swelling and scar tissue (with your surgeon's clearance)
-
Limited range of motion after an injury
This work supports, and doesn't replace, care from your doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor. If you have sharp pain, numbness or significant swelling, please see a medical provider first.
What to Expect in Your Session
Your first visit starts with a short intake about your symptoms, history and goals. Your therapist then works on the area of concern and the surrounding muscles that feed into it. You're in control the whole time: pressure is adjusted to your comfort, and we can pause at any point. Before you leave, we'll talk through what we found, what to expect over the next few days and how many sessions make sense for your goals.
