If you clench or grind your teeth, wake up with a sore jaw, or feel tightness through your face, temples and neck, TMJ massage can help. Buccal massage works the jaw and facial muscles both from outside the face and from inside the cheeks with gloved hands, reaching deep muscles like the masseter and pterygoids that regular massage can't access. At Schwartz Sports Massage on upper State Street, Amanda Schwartz, CMT, combines TMJ and buccal massage with an orthopedic manual therapy approach to release the muscles that control your jaw.

What Is TMJ Massage?
Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. It's moved by some of the hardest-working muscles in your body: the masseter, temporalis and pterygoids. Stress, teeth grinding, posture and long hours at a screen can leave these muscles tight and overworked. TMJ massage uses targeted manual therapy on the jaw, temples, neck and upper shoulders to release that tension and help your jaw move more freely.
What is buccal massage
Buccal massage works the face from both the outside and the inside of the cheek. Wearing medical-grade gloves, your therapist uses gentle intraoral techniques to reach muscles that can't be accessed from the outside, especially the pterygoids and the inner masseter. Many clients describe the result as a deep sense of release in the jaw and face.
Who can benefit
TMJ and buccal massage may help if you experience:
-
Jaw tightness, soreness or fatigue
-
Clenching or grinding, day or night
-
Clicking or limited jaw opening
-
Tension headaches or pain around the temples
-
Facial or neck tension from stress or screen time
-
Tightness after dental work (with your dentist's okay)
This work supports, and doesn't replace, care from your dentist, doctor or physical therapist. If you've been diagnosed with a TMJ disorder, we're happy to work alongside your care team.
What to Expect in Your Session
Each session starts with a short conversation about your symptoms and goals. Your therapist then works through your neck, shoulders and jaw before moving to the face and gentle intraoral work. You're in control the whole time: pressure is adjusted to your comfort, and we can pause at any point. Many clients notice their jaw feels looser and more relaxed right after their first session.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does buccal massage hurt?
It can feel intense in tight areas, but it shouldn't be painful. Your therapist works slowly and adjusts the pressure to your comfort throughout.

How many sessions will I need?
Some clients feel relief after one session. Ongoing clenching or TMJ issues usually respond best to a short series of sessions, followed by occasional maintenance.

Is intraoral massage safe?
Yes. It's done with medical-grade gloves and gentle, controlled pressure. Let us know if you've had recent dental work, surgery or an active infection in your mouth.

How long is a session and how much does it cost?
30 minutes for $90. TMJ work can also be added to a full-body massage.

Can TMJ massage help with headaches?
Tension in the jaw and temples often contributes to headaches, and many clients find relief when those muscles are released.

Do you offer TMJ massage near Goleta?
Yes. Our State Street office is a short drive from Goleta, Hope Ranch and downtown Santa Barbara.
